I have no clue....but I've been a server now for 6 years and I wish we could get a normal wage instead of relying on people to tip.

What you need to know though is that we only make about $2.50/hour before taxes, so if you're thinking about not tipping your server, think again. We do A LOT of work, not just taking your order and bringing your food. There's a lot of work involved that you don't see.

Gratuity is defined as: a gift of money for a service, especially as an amount above what is owed.

And has been around as long as etiquettes and manners have.

Umm Maybe back in the day waiters were spies and were payed but overhear things said in restaurants. Other people saw this and thought well I guess he's a good waiter! Or the waiters/waitresses would do little extra things for their prefered customers for that little bit of a tip. Who the heck knows.

It was invented as a means of rewarding unpaid slave labour for services rendered.Slaves who gave really excellent service could thus earn enough to purchase their freedom from their owner. This custom lingers on,but in Australia is considered no substitute for a decent wage. If they won't pay a decent wage, let employers do their own work. Its better to starve than rely on tips.

I don't know i wish they made a regular wage so that we didn't have to feel we had to tip them. But waitresses that does their job well gets tipped well the ones who don't do well complain they don't make enough but you have to be good at your job if you want that bigger tip to provide for you. I don't tip rude lazy waitresses or ones who seem agravated that you ask for something. The ones who are good we try to tip them way more than the percent you are told to tip. So that's my story...But I don't know what the deal is with how it started.
