If you feel like giving, give and give well, give with out batting an eyelid or your concience pricking you. the Bible says the Lord love a cheerful giver. Give when you are lest expected to, give someting that will cost you, the Bible says when we give we lend to God and God will never owe anyone.

When we give we are sowing seeds to reap in the future, a wise man said in the Bible that "cast your bread upon the waters and after many days you will find it"(paraphrasing) it a principle of investment based on giving.

If your heart tells you to give to beggers, give to them (am not saying they should be encouraged) but as you give generally God will bless you and return to you in folds you are not expecting. All the best.

Be careful and selective about it.

I used to live, literally, on the street, and my only income was what I could earn selling The Big Issue.

It annoyed me intensely to see beggars, who ALL recieved state benefits and mostly would go home to their flats at the end of the day, raking in more money in half an hour than I could expect to make all day.

And if you do buy The Big Issue make sure the vendor has the proper ID. Stock theft from vendors is not rare.

(They don't get the stock free, they buy every copy after the first ten on the day they start.)

Just remembered another option. Some charities sell vouchers which can be exchanged for food and clothes at their soup kitchens. People would sometimes give these to me when I was selling The Issue. I never used them myself but I did know first-hand which of the ostensibly homeless people around were genuine cases and which were chancers so I could pass them on to those who'd make best use of them.

In addition, the chancers never use the soup kitchens so if they were given a voucher they'd throw it away. The money that had been paid for it, though would remain valuable for the charity. They were a good idea.

This is an incident i shall never forget.
I was to board a domestic flight from Goa to Bombay (Mumbai).
Due to a technical problem the flight was grounded.
Passangers were shifted to an international flight via Bombay.
The flight landed at the international airport.
I got into a taxi.
A begger woman with a child approached the vehicle. I searched in my pocket and found a Rs 5 coin. I gave it to the begger women.
She looked at it and returned it back to me, saying " you will have more use of it"
I was stunned. The cab driver consoled me saying the beggars here want foreign currency.
I learnt my lesson.
Today I prefer buying them a meal or giving away clothing.

I don't give money to bums. Some of these grown men who go around begging for spare change or a dollar make more than I did delivering pizza, and I made pretty good money. I've been homeless and I've been dirt poor, but I've never begged strangers on the street for money or cigarettes with some crazy sob story--"My baby's been in the hospital with a lung infection and he needs medicine, can I get five dollars for some diapers?" Yes, that's a real bum sob story and I've heard other stuff out of bums' mouths that was even more incredible. I've watched a man at a Wal-Mart in the Queen City, who had just hit me up for some spare change, GET IN HIS CAR WHICH WAS TWICE AS NICE AS MINE!!! An old co-worker saw one of those sign-holding intersection bums walk to and drive off in a vehicle at the end of his day, which he had hidden from view of said intersection--imagine that! The best thing you can do for a bum is deal with him or her respectfully--and respectfully decline to give them any money.

I'm not too sure on what you mean by focus on children. But I do sometimes give them money, depending on hwo they are presenting themselves and if they reek of alcohol or not. If they really look sincere -=not knowing if the yreally ARE sincere or if its an act=- then I do, but the ones that swagger up smelling like alcohol and really hassling me, then I dont. Maybe they are choosing to live the life of a beggar, but then again you cant really get a good job these days if you poverty stricken. Not saying it's impossible, just extremely hard.

I have q great deal of experience with this issue, particularly because my home church is in a neighborhood where there are a lot of illegals. The Bible says that we are to help the poor, but we are not to encourage them or anyone else in their sin. If you suspect that a beggar will use the money to by drugs or alcohol, then refuse to give them money. No where in the Bible does it say that you must say yes to every request that people make of you. You have an obligation to resist sin. You may offer to by them something to eat, or if you do not have any money to spend on them, sthen you can always pray with them that their living conditions and financial status will improve. Tell that that Jesus loves them and that he died for them. If they trust in him, then he will provide for their needs. Kindness and love in these situations will go a long ways. If they resist you, then this attitude is on them, not you. Do not give in to their persistent pressures to give them money if you do not wish to do so. They are professionals at acting and lying to get what they want.

It depends on the line they use. If they give some big sob story, I'll usually say no, whether I have money to spare or not. But if they are honest and don't give me a line, I usually say yes, if I can. The best line I ever heard went something like this: Excuse me brother, I'm just 50 cents shy of getting my next jug. Can you help a brother out? He got my last 50 cents.

If you want to donate or contribute money to help the needy, give it to an actual charitable organization. I've seen documentaries on television which reveal that the "beggars" are not in as dire straights as they would have you believe. They are making a "job" out of begging and will continue to do so, as long as folks continue to throw money at them.

i guess it depends a bit on where you from...in india they probably won't have another chance then begging their whole life anyway, but in the states or europe....well i don't know. why not?

they have to deal with the way they live their life i guess...if they want to be beggars they should be.
you can give money if you feel like - and if you don't then don't

me personally i change my opinion with everybody that is aproaching me - the only good thing about me still smoking: i usually give cigarettes - but with that i could start thinking that i might encourage them to kill their lungs and the whole circle of thoughts starts all over again....

be careful and selective about it. I used to stay, actually, on the line, and my in reality income replaced into what i ought to earn promoting the tremendous situation. It annoyed me intensely to ascertain beggars, who ALL recieved state advantages and quite frequently would bypass domicile to their apartments on the right of the day, raking in better money in 0.5 an hour than i ought to anticipate to make all day. And in case you do purchase the tremendous situation make effective the seller has the right identity. inventory robbery from distributors isn't uncommon. (they don't get the inventory loose, they purchase each reproduction after the first ten on the day they commence.) merely remembered an option selection. some charities promote vouchers which will be exchanged for nutrition and garments at their soup kitchens. human beings would now and again provide those to me at the same time as i replaced into promoting the region. I never used them myself yet I did understand first-hand which of the ostensibly homeless human beings round were authentic situations and that were chancers so i ought to bypass them on to those who'd make maximum appropriate use of them. as well, the chancers never use the soup kitchens so in the adventure that they were given a voucher that that they had throw it away. the money that were paid for it, although would stay effective for the charity. They were a competent theory.
