squeaky sounds like brakes, scratching the black-board have very high frequencies. Human ear has an ear-drum which vibrates at same frequency as incoming sound waves. so high frequency sounds cause discomfort within our ears.

I read somewhere that perhaps the way we react to the sound of nails is a survival mechanism to make us react to a predator's claws on rocks... we are tuned in to react to a certain type sound so we can run away from danger. (I can't recall where I read this).

I did find a book (in an online search) that has a series of essays, one of which discusses survival and fingernails...

if you read the review for that book they mention fingernails. might be worth tracking down the book...

Not everyone reacts to scratching nails... maybe they'd die if in a predator/prey situation for lack of a reaction? I am not "afraid" of such sounds, but they certainly make me cringe. Ever since reading about this theory (many years ago), I have thought it a very good reason for the cringing behavior so many people have to certain frequency, loud, scratching noises.

its not that people are afraid of thses sounds, its more of irritating because the high frequencies can cause disruptiin in the ear.
