I went to look it up for you but there is only 3 choices of 97 Sonata 1. Sonata, 2. Sonata GL, 3. Sonata GS not Sonata III. Maybe it is a Sonata that isn't sold in the USA. All Data says for a Sonata is 6.1L or 6.4Qts also Sonata has a 2.0L engine. For a Sonata GL they have a 2.0L or 3.0L engine. if it has a 3.0L it is 7.5L or 7.9Qts. And for a Sonata GLS they only have a 3.0L. So to sum it up 6.1L for a 4cyl and 7.5L for a 6 Cyl. Also it uses SP-II trans fluid.
This maybe a complete fill. You won't get all the fluid out if you drain out the fluid from the drain plug. I would put half of the fluid in and the check it to see how much more.

Check your owner's manual. It will list the proper amount. If you don't have an Owner's manual, run a Yahoo search for them or contact Hyundai
