Lawyers also know the rules of court (when, how, and what oral and written motions to file: e.g. when to ask for a summary judgment, or a motion for judgment as a matter of law, etc.) that the lay person does not know and does not have time and/or knowledge to find out.
Just like you would not give yourself an operation, you would use the services of a doctor. If you have a legal issue you use the services of someone who handles legal conflicts for a living.
The media gives plaintiffs' lawyers and criminal lawyers a bad image, when there are so many other areas of law which lawyers specialize (estates & trusts, taxation, real estate, corporate law, ect.)
The some people hate lawyers is because they do not understand the technical aspects of the legal process in any given case. Further, they do not understand the Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Evidence, or caselaw in the jurisdiction.

Every case you have someone who is either guilty or not guilty. You have two lawyers, one arguing that the person is guilty, the other arguing that the person is not guilty.
In either case, one of them is lying.
Also, you represent a force that no single individual can bring to the table. If two neighbors are having an argument they might eventually come to an agreement between themselves. But if one goes to a lawyer they are bringing the backing of police with guns, so the other guy has to get his lawyer who also has that backing. They both use the millions and millions of lines of law code to go back and forth and usually the lawyer who knows more of the intricacies of the law is the one who wins, not necessarily the one who is representing the party that is in the 'right'.
With fewer laws that the lay-man could understand, ordinary citizens would be able to go before a jury and plead their case if it got to that point and it would be up to those 12 people to decide based upon simple common sense reasoning. There would be less cases because people who were in the wrong would know and not consider 'bringing out the big guns' by bringing in a high priced lawyer with a slick tongue. But the lawyers would never want such a thing to happen because then they would be out of a job. So they support even more complicated laws that nobody can understand unless they've spent many many years in study.

Because some lawyers are pricks. Believe me, I know, but i don't think the proportion of a**holes is any greater than in the general population...
Really, I think people hate lawyers because like in Shakespeare's play, the person hating the lawyers was someone in power who didn't want their authority challenged, and that is basically what lawyers do, challenge authority.

Not all lawyers.
But the legal profession has certian obligations which make you surrender your ethics in favor of winning a case. You're supposed to defend people who you think or know are guilty. The unscrupulousness of the "celebrity" lawyers is particularly disgusting.
Still, I'd rather have a lawyer than none at all

Its because they consider lawyers to be people who reverse the justice pattern of society by proving the actually accused into innocent.
But the fact is that it is the sole duty of a lawyer to defend his client

Shakespeare wrote “First thing we do is kill all the lawyers!”
? What do you call ten thousand lawyers on the bottom of the ocean?
A Good Start! An honourable concept gone grotesquely wrong.

I guess because of the bad rep. criminal defense lawyers have. Many people assume that they succeed in gettin lenient sentences for guilty people and that they get paid a lot of money for doing it. Also because many lawyers charge for every little thing they do for you, people assume they are rip-offs, like plumbers and electricians who charge for labour and materials, lawyers are just the same.

I think, because they are a "neccesary" evil. Like Police. NO ONE wants to see that blue light pullin' you over...right?
But: If your Police Department CLOSED for a week....it would be complete PANDAMONIUM!
Lawyers, cost BIG $$$$, and we're all kinda nervous that they "talk" after the court etc......golf etc...and discuss sensitive topics...like it's dinner conversation....when these things may effect US......BIG TIME!!
Trust, or lack of it......is the MAIN reason.
Gotta go! Judge is coming back in!

IF they would just tell the "truth" to the jury, it would help! By that I mean that they are the jury and the judge...what THEY say goes....
neither the Judge nor the Lawyer does this!
After all that is why the laws were written that we be judged by our peers.........

because they get screwed. if you have to get a lawyer, chances are your paying either way. You either pay the lawyer his sky high fees or pay the judgement.
