I'm thinking about getting my degree in film. I already have 6 years exerience with photography, editing, reporting, shooting and directing with the U.S Army. but whats the chances of finding a good job? is it mostly freelance? I just dont see a point to get a degree for a job thats impossible to get?

it's a very, very difficult industry because there is a ton of competition and the hardest part is jobs only last so long. when a film or show is over, you're out of work again.
you must be very tenacious and develope a thick skin, but if you really want it and are willing to work hard then there is always a way. I ran into an actress i directed and hadn't seen in years. she had talent, but said she wasn't willing to live in a closet to pursue acting, so now she's a lawyer.
Plenty of internships or low budget films that pay little but that is how you gain the experience, and most importantly make contacts. the most important thing is your drive.

Get in tight with the Jewish community.... Everything in the film industry is controlled in some way by Jews and I think you have to know people to get into freelance work.As with any industry you have to start at the bottom and work your way up.... Perhaps an internship at a TV studio would get you an inside look. If you have a degree in anything you can pretty much find a job for it. If you have determination and a willingness to go out and find work then there will be openings for you to find. And depending on the tyoe of work your actually looking for I am sure there is always a short supply of people that can handle the job and do it with expertise. Most people that want to be in the film industry are looking for acting jobs or directing jobs.... I am sure they go through alot of stagehands sound engineers and camera rollers. But having never been to hollywood or a huge movie studio I couldn't tell you how volitile the industry is. I know that posting your resume and hinting that a degree is in your future that you would be a welcome edition on any set TV or otherwise. Put thought into what aspect of film you would like to go into and post your resume on Monster.com or another resume website.... Also a few months back I searched for job and career statistics and found a .gov site that had a list of every job and the openings current amount of people doing that particular job as well as how much they made... I unfortunatly forgot the name and never saved the results but I found it very informative and a good site for utilizing goverment records. I wish you luck in whichever field of study you choose to go into and hope that you find a career that helps you go beyond what everyone else is set to achieve.

The film market doesn't seem to be slowing any. A great deal of work is being outsourced O/S like animation in India. But that shouldn't affect you for the moment.

The film industry is about Networking and is somewhat of a gypsy lifestyle, jumping from contract to contract. Hard to get initial footing, yet once your on board it is one of the most satisfying carreer choices you can make.

If it's a passion and a part of your matrix you'll do it, if it all seems too daunting, you're probably barking up the wrong tree.
