well it is used in a petrol engine.. the petrol is mixed with air and needs to be ignited with a spark plug for combustion to take place.. it takes place in the ignition stage..

The spark from the spark plug ignites the petrol in the chamber at the top of the piston causing the petrol to "explode" and push the piston down which in turn turns the crank shaft to give power to the vehicle.
