Walter Payton's last year in the league was 1987, truly disqualifying him from this question.
Also, if the question was from 1980, LT (Lawrence Taylor) would have to be on the list, but his 1st year in the league was 1981, which takes off 28 of his career sacks.
I think you really have to look at as who has changed the game the most since 1985 and here are my top 6, in no particular order.
1. John Elway
2. Lawrence Taylor
3. Deion Sanders
4. Barry Sanders (sorry, Payton played too many years b4 1985, Marshall Faulk may be a better fit).
5. Reggie White
6. Jerry Rice
If you look at the NFL today, teams are still looking for these types of players at those specific positions: A QB that can lead, throw, and run; a LB that can blitz, tackle, and cover; a CB that can outrun anyone, intercept the ball, and play special team; a RB that can be the focal point of the running game and do all of the little things; a DE that just can't be stopped, but can stop the run and the pass; and a WR that could catch an anvil dropped off of the top of the Statue of Liberty, run tight routes, and beat the defender.

I personally think kobe is not the greatest, but one of the best. He can get really clutch and hit any shot that is needed, so that parts him from a ton of people. Not many people can do that and he has a very long range he can hit threes from 25 feet out or so. He was never a great team player until he noticed he hogs too much when Shaq left. D; bummer, he is now averaging around 5 assists per game. Jordan was really good too, but he is different to Kobe because he was an inside player that likes driving into the lane from the front. Kobe was more of a perimeter guy, and if he did go inside he would usually go baseline for the reverse. I don't think about Championships or rings or any award when it comes to a great player, nor do i think about a one time performance that i doubt will ever happen again, a great player can carry a team that isn't that great. Allen Iverson carried his 76'ers a ton with only the help of Dikembe Mutumbo and kobe '09 and '10 was with the help of pau gasol and i believe MWP ( Ron Artest )
