I think it was a dubbed German series and maybe it lost something in the translation. I don't actually remember it, but I liked The Fast Show's spoof of it, called something like The Singing and Ringing and Binging and Bonging Tree.

I have been told that the programme, coming from Eatern Europe during the Cold War, was infact and allegorical tale showing that the pursuit of Capitalism would make you ugly (metaphorically speaking) and the pursuit of helping one another i.e. socialism, would bring out your inner beauty. Wierd non?

Yes i can, it was the tales from europe and i just bought it along with the tinder box from play.com.

The moral to the tale was selfishness made the princess ugly but the less selfish she became the more her beauty returned.

Was totally diappointed after watching it and wished i'd kept my childhood memories of it although the tinder box was good, lol.
