If you don't have extensive experience with computers, you may not know what a computer registry is. The Windows registry is found in Windows 9X, Windows CE, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, and the Windows XP operating systems. The registry is essentially the catalog or reference source for your computer.
When you attempt to open a program–for example, your word processor–your computer queries the registry to find where the program is stored. The registry contains references to settings and values for the operating system, the programs, user profiles, document types, property sheet settings, system hardware and ports. Basically, much of what goes into or comes out of your computer is noted in the registry.
Only those with a thorough knowledge of computers should attempt to change the registry. Before tampering with the registry, make sure that you back it up to avoid losing any information. If you make a mistake while altering the registry and it isn't backed up, you may lose information vital to the proper functioning of your computer.
Registry cleaners helps run PCs at optimum efficiency as it takes care of the potential dangers caused by spyware adware etc. that runs in the background of computer and slow down the same besides monitoring your internet activity .Registry cleaners also fix the inherent problems of the systems . There are free registry cleaners available on net. However it is well advised to go for a priced professional program to have good technical support.
I know of 2 FREE Registry cleaners that have "Safe" settings : 1) Standard Edition of "TweakNow" available at www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html . Have to use the "Beginner" setting for it to find "Safe" entries to delete . 2) "Evaluation Copy" of "Registry First Aid" available from www.rosecitysoftware.com/Reg1Aid ; when on that page MUST scroll down to find the "Evaluation Copy". However, after the 1st scan of each day will ONLY allow 2 entries to be deleted per scan; the 1st scan has a maximum of 12 entries to be deleted.

First you need to understand what a registry does. Windows registry is like a set of directions, instructions that tells Windows where everything is and how they should be handled. Think of it like a pilot check-list.
Messing around with a registry manually without having a clue of what you are doing is like a person with a death wish. Your pc will simply stop working@!
You can't win really - to be or not to be is the question! If you don't maintain your registry Windows will gradually slows down anyhow.
As you install and uninstall programs, delete files, work on it for months, errors get generated and accumulate in the registry. The registry is not self "intelligent" or intelligently managed by Windows - it forget things, leave debris behind, causing slowdowns, system errors etc
When I ran my registry through a registry cleaner it registered well over 300 errors!
So do maintain your registry on a regular basis. Do it only with a cleaner. Just surf for one.
There's plenty of freeware registry cleaners available. Good commercial ones are System Mechanic, Tuneup Utilities, XP Repair Pro. Just download and use their trial period.
