Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles landed at a point on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Singapore river on 28 January 1819. There is a monument there to commemorate the event.

When Sir Thomas arrived there it was a small fishing visit. It grew to be much more. He established a free-trade post at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula — a site that became Singapore.

For extra trivia points: The meaning of Singapore. It is derived from the Malay language and means Lion City.
