In the US, most manufacturing firms are strictly regulated by law and do not have much choice where they are placed. The trend in all manufacturing is toward decentralization. This is due to shipping costs, and also to security concerns.
It is simply safer and cheaper to be scattered near the supplier, and user.

Well, business in general is moving towards decentralized.
They try to get the best products and services at the best prices. and with good phones and stuff, it is and will be more possible to keep doing this.
