Science fiction literature has a foot in both camps. While a novel like 1984, written in 1948, clearly echoes the bleak world of cold war Britain, Pohl and Kornbluth's The Space Merchants, published in the boom times of the American 1950s, foretells a polluted world in which trees are so valuable that wood is used to make jewellery rather than furniture.
this is from a web page but I can't find anything if I search Space Merchants in film
this was the web page

The actor was Bruce Dern. He was in charge of two large domes in space along with two robots, Hughie and Louie. The two domes contain the last of plants that had been on earth, the earth had become so polluted. When those in power decided to destroy the domes, Dern's role fought to save them. In the end he was to die. The two robots carried on the work. George Lucas got the idea of R2D2 and CP30 from this movie. For the life of me I can remember the name.

Know the one you mean it was made in the seventies and the model was used in the origonal Battlestar Galactrica, the robots were inspiration for artoo deeto in star wars... So date wise that may help...
That helped me find it.
quote
R2-D2 was partly inspired by the robots Huey, Dewey and Louie from Douglas Trumbull's 1972 film Silent Running.

Ooooooh, that sounds very sad. I think it is "Silent Running". It sounds a bit like "Solaris" as well and "2001".
Too sad and weird for me, but I hope you find it, as I know what its like to have something on your mind and not be able to resolve it!
