Funnily enough, England doesn't actually have a national anthem! God save the Queen is the national anthem for the whole of the UK and is adopted by the English as Wales and Scotland have their own. During the Commonwealth Games, England adopted 'Land of Hope and Glory'.

"You'll never walk alone" is Not the national Antham, nor is "England england" & guess what! "Rule Britania" isn't either!
However, " God Save the Queen" is..
I don't recall hearing that at any match by the spectators during a game, only at the beginning of a game IF the band/s play it.
This Flag waving craz in England right now, is just football gone stupid!
95% of the population don't even know The George Cross is the England flag, 99% of them don't even know when St Georges day is!
The Union Jack is the United Kingdom flag of England Scotland Wales & Irland, no longer united, sadly.
To be a patriat is not to stand up and shout I'm English, then throw a beer glass in someones face, this is NOT patraitism, but hooliganism.

A reply to BOB, the national anthem is sung at the beginning of the match, the begining of the second half, and right at the end of the match, in about the 85th minute, why? to piss people like you off!!! go and play some cricket.

Not only are they patriotic, when the players listen to the national anthem it makes them very proud to play for their country.

I was watching the Socceroo fans on the news(and weeping Japanese fans) and I quite clearly heard a rousing chorus or two of Advance Australia Fair.I suppose they do that because they have a Union Jack up in the corner of their flags and it reminds them of when their great grandpa got deported to Botany Bay.

it is the shortest National Anthem, the words are easy to remember and when you are a drunk punter (customer).. Easy is good.

It is an Anthem, unlike the American anthem, they don't have to have different renditions of. Again one version, easy to remember, drunk sports fans, EASY IS GOOD..

Because we love our nation, even though most people hate us. Travel to Bermuda and see how much the 'colonialists' love us.

We like everyone to know just who England are and what we are about
