Spread them out, but try not to leave large gaps of space between them. Very small gaps are okay, but large ones would let flames come through (if it is a gas grill), which can scorch your food. On the other hand, if they are piled up very tightly, they will not get enough oxygen to burn well, plus it is a waste of briquettes.
