Go to the department of records for your town, and find your home on a local map there, get the lot and block number and you will find out who subdivided the land to build homes, and what it was before they did that.
A friend of mine did this and found that his home was built on an old cemetery, and he got really freaked out and sold the place.

Find out which department in your local court house has aerial maps. The maps are usually done ever couple of years or so. This will have a picture of your property on it as far back as their records go. You might have to pay for copies.
