it would be cheaper for a pc laptop but i hear mac is much better and safer

The operating system and the label and design. Mac OS X and Windows XP can be run on the macbook, and these are the main (commercial) operating systems of the moment.
The price of a mac is probably justifiable by the quality of the components but I doubt it. You have to admit thought that macs are some of the sleekest, cleanest designs out there.
In conclusion if you need mac OS and/or you really like the design get a mac. But before you do take into account that Windows Vista will not run on macs because of the way it handles booting

Mac OS X is the reason macbooks are so great. If you could run OS X on a PC laptop then it would be better because Apple's hardware is crap compared to the kind of stuff you can get otherwise.

They are just better. Fewer viruses, less reboots and crashes. Yes, they are more expensive. Software is more expensive but you get what you pay for. Their support is better. They are TRUE plug in play. Working with windows is like trying to get to your neighbors house by going around the block and then cutting thru yards...whereas with a mac you can walk right next door! Mac users know exactly what that means!
