I started running (on treadmill) three to four yrs ago to loose weight. I used to run 4 to 6 days a week for 2.5 miles, at a speed of 7 to 8.5 m/hr with a 2.5 to 5 degree of elevation, which help me burn almost 350+ cal. Besides running I play soccer and tennis 3 to 4 times a week. Now since 45 days my knees are hurting too much, I try to run but it hurts and I can't even bent my knees. I quit running for a week, which was very hard because I'm so use to of running. I tried running again and still no luck. I quit running for a 3 weeks, and tried again and it hurts again. I'm so addictive to running and can't think of switching my running with anything else like cycling or elliptical machine.
What I'm doing wrong? What do I have to do so I can start running again? Does elliptical training machines or cycling have some effect as running?
Many thanks for your help…

First, see doctor. Second, rest. You say you quit running on the treadmill for three weeks, but you didn;t stop the tennis and soccer, both of which are very demanding on the knees, lots of stopping and starting, changing direction,,,,that's how knees get injured, the inability to control changes in direction or acceleration\deceleration.

When you get better, please consider decreasing your elevation some on the treadmill, by doing the same thing, running on elevation, you have no doubt created some strength imbalances in your legs. Powerful quads, weak hamstrings, maybe...and that could affect the knees.

So, go to the Doctor, take whatever they say, because you need to keep that inflammation down, no hot compresses or baths, you want cold therapy, and rest rest rest.

First of all, you should see your doctor as soon as possible, to establish what is wrong with your knees. Such a diagnosis can not be given online without seeing the patient.

Apart from that I would advice you to change your routine. If you want to run, do it for real, on normal surface over a real distance.
That gives your legs and body the proper exercise. A treadmill is only useful as a short-time alternative to real running and should not be used exclusively (as you seem to have done) since it has no natural variants and stresses your joints.

Turtle Girl's right. Until you see a doctor, stick to taking very long and perhaps brisk walks - you can get much of the same cardio benefit while taking a lot of strain off your knees. And you have to take that strain off immediately.

lol.....whilst my dad's away and are not able to select me up and i am approximately to overlook the bus (which could actually imply me having to take an hour lengthy stroll again residence as there are not some other shipping amenities in which i are living!!)
