My roommate is Chinese.... 5'9", 150 lbs. female, born and raised in China and she pretty much shatters all stereotypes. Most people think that one of her parents has to be white. She watches quite a big of Asian programming and from my own observations, I think that the Japanese tend to have smaller more slanted eyes and their facial features are flatter than the Chinese. Chinese people tend to have more curviness to their nose and cheekbones. Obviously, this can't be said for everyone but this has just been my observation. I don't have much knowledge of other asian cultures so I couldn't answer that.

It's not possible with any great degree of accuracy. It's the similar with northern Europeans, one can't really differentiate between the British, Germans, Dutch, Belgians, Austrians, Swiss and French, etc.

By their eyes, shape of their face, thickness of their hair... But hey, I'm Japanese and people (Japanese too) think I'm Chinese ... so the best way is to just ask them...
