too many tasks, spy-ware, corrupt system files, hardware issue take your pick....

try a fresh install of XP if possible.
Don't take it to get fixed it's easier to just install a fresh copy yourself!

If not, run ad-aware or spybot, then find a program to fix invalid registry entries.

there alot of reasons why the computer is starting up slow and shutting down slow - give you most of the reasons and hopefully the solutions

Usually it is the programs that are starting and running in the background that cause such a slow start up - click start > type run > then click on the startup tab - should create a list with ticks in it - for a diagnosis reason > disable all (don't worry this is totaly reversable) - then restart

has this helped ?

still slow - boot into safemode - restart and when you see you computers splash screen keep tapping f5 or f8 - select safe mode

is this still slow or ok - if ok it will be some program running in the back ground

again go into msconfig - check the services > select hide all microsoft services > are these the cause of a slow pc?

delete any non essential files- click start - assessories - system tools - disk clean up

do a defrag within this mode (more efficient than normal mode)

- click start > my computer > right click on you hard drive - then click properties > then tools > then scan your disk for errors (make sure both the check boxes are checked) you will then get a warning - just click yes - then restart your computer - this will then scan you hard drive for errors and fix them for you

still running slow? need to get two or three spyware sweepers on your system - these maybe slowing your system down - try the link below - spybot is ok and lava soft adaware

still slow - look in the event viewer - click on start then right click on my computer > click manage > then select event viewer

three options - applications, system, security - click on applications and look for any errors - do the same for the system - these can give you vital clues regarding your system - might be a hanging application or a system resource maybe failing to load because of a corrupt driver - would need those details though to be a able to do a diag (Can always IM me - if im available)

If you have got SP2 installed - looking the system properties - have a look a your virtual memory - make sure it is not set to high or best yet make sure it is system managed

Another reason may be ACPI settings but that is too detailed to go into on this page

hope this helps

There is another little known problem that might be to blame. It is a problem with DMA (direct memory access) what happens is XP can stop for some strange anything on the IDE channels from using the memory and puts all the information through the processor. The processor can't handle all the info thus slowing the PC down.

I had this problem and it used to take 4-5mins to boot up!

Heres what you do....
1: goto start menu, control panel,
2: in control panel go to system, hardware, device manager
3: Now look down the list for IDE ATA/ATAPI controler. Open it up using the little + on the side. .
4:Now right click on primary IDE controller and chose properties
5:Now go to advanced settings

Now you should have a window up with two boxes Device 0 and Device 1. If your hard drive is the primary master drive look in the Device 0 box

If in the Current transfer mode box it says PIO Only
this means the memory is NOT being used.

If it says somthing like Ultra DMA mode 5 then you can stop reading here, the problem lies somewhere else.

If it is PIO Only you need to open Transfer Mode box and change this to DMA if available Then restart you computer. That should solve it.

Now this next part is a bit drastic some people have had problems with this so please use it as a last resort.

The worst case sanario is the Transfer Mode box is grayed out
(this happened to me) you need to through steps 1-4 but instead of going to Advance Properties, go the drivers menu and uninstall the drivers, restart your PC (and cross your fingers)
XP should now load the original setting (DMA) for that IDE channel
Problem solved.

Thank you and good night

Can I have my 10 points now

you have not provided details. hence it's difficult to give a correct answer.

The most common problem is: A lot of background processes.

Once your computer starts up completely, right click on your 'task bar'. click on 'task manager'
In the task manager window, look on the bottom left. There should be the 'number' of processes running. If the number is above 50, then your computer will take time to shut down and boot up.

Try to reduce the start up files.

The other reason could be that there is any one process that is a system critical process which takes time to start up or shut down, hence slowing the overall shutdown and startup of the system.

Consult a computer professional for further help.

a slow shutdown, most of the time is because of a process failing (or being slow) to stop. You can find whether it is a user-space process or a system service by logging off windows instead of shutting down. If logging off is slow too, then there's a high chance that's a process causing the problem. You can try disable processes launching in startup using "msconfig" command. Just type "msconfig" in run and disable suspicious ones in startup tab.

computer shut and can be caused by also sorts of things often too many tasks running and often apps that just will not give to the system that quickly. You may be running unnecessary services networking when you don't have a network or apps that start when the system starts. Fancy desktop wallpapers don't help at all. They can alot of processing power behind the scenes. Maybe you just need some more memory.

this would properly be brought about from some issues. The likley causes are you're usings a ton of memory on startup. in simple terms be sure you dont have a gaggle of classes set to open up on start up up. you also could have some variety of malacious software that has put in itself on your computer i.e trojan/virus. An ulikley reason is often that your cpu is overheating that can reason device instability and slowdowns. Rupture is nice. verify you defrag and sparkling the HDD.

A fresh install should be your last resort.I agree completly with pooya k's answer. One more thing could be that you have chose the OS to delete the paging file when shutting down, maybe you have used a optimization program that recommended it for security or manually enabled it to do so.The answer by pooya k is exactly what I would have advised word for word.Only mentioning the page file.Good luck
