Repair book is telling me that my quad w/ chain drive should have a clutch. But compared to the picture in the book there is no place on my engine for a clutch mechanism. I have two ways to brake the rear wheel, a foot brake and a hand brake. According the my book the hand brake should be a clutch lever. Was there such a thing as an automatic from suzuki in 87?

-Your quad does have an automatic clutch. It also has a conventional clutch (friction plates) for shifting gears. Both clutches are in the right crankcase cover.
-When you use the shift lever, the conventional clutch disengages, to allow the transmission, to change gears smoothly.
-When you let go of the shift lever, the conventional clutch re-engages to connect the motor to the trani. and the centrifugal clutch takes over.
-Here's a way to try and understand how the clutches work. Shift into first. The quad just sits there until you accelerate. After you get moving, shift to second.Give it a little bit of throttle and lift the shift lever a tiny bit (not enough to change gears). You'll hear the engine rev as if you just pulled in the clutch lever (if you had one).

The quad runner had an auto clutch, the quad sport has the manual clutch. Sound like you either have the wrong manual or are looking at the wrong illustration in the manual. You can look up an exploded view at www.mrcycles.com or www.bikebandit.com.
