i prefer fireworks mostly because i have more experience with it and photoshop scares me just to look at it. lol from what i hear and read in these answers looks like i might be the lone ranger here though. :-)
you can test drive either for 30 days free and then make up your mind which you like by going to the website.
btw has anyome noticed that all the macromedia products are now being sold on adobe's site? when did this come about i wonder. lol

I have never worked with Fireworks but I believe the majority will say that Adobe Photoshop is better. Perhaps, it depends on what it is that you'd like to do. Personally, I use the program to generate images such as banners, website buttons, website layouts, etc... I say download the Free Trial versions and see which program you find yourself more comfortable with.

Fireworks' main focus is on web graphics. It was originally developed by Macromedia as part of their website creation suite which also included Flash and Dreamweaver. Fireworks is perfect for creating and editing web based images, but it is not ideal for many other types of graphic design projects such as print jobs (magazine covers, posters, etc.).
Photoshop, originally developed by Adobe, is considered by many to be the standard digital image editor and is used by professional artist in various industries. Photoshop has many more features than Fireworks and allows you to export, import, and edit many more types of image formats. However, Photoshop is much more difficult to learn than Fireworks.
In conclusion:
Fireworks: Great for smaller, quicker jobs such as web design.
Photoshop: A necessity for those planning on pursuing a career in the graphic arts field.

I've used a little of both, and Fireworks seems to be easier to use but there's less you can do with it. However, Photoshop is used by a lot more people than people that use Fireworks, so you can get help. ("Photoshop" is now a verb. "Fireworks" is not.)

Fireworks is easier but it doesn't have certain advanced features supported in Photoshop.... which hardly a beginner will use....
Fireworks is good to start out with
