I cut for years. It was the easiest way for me to deal with pain, and for some reason it made me feel better. Here's why: when you cut your skin, hormones called "endorphines" rush to the area. Endorphines make you feel good. So yes, cutting makes you feel better, physically even. It's like relief. The same thing happens when you cry. I noticed that when my parents would beat me and I'd cry, I'd always feel really good afterwards, not in my head but my body felt ok. I never understood that.

People don't usually approve of "cutting" because they think it's all about trying to commit suicide, or that it's really painful. The truth is, cutting sort of does the opposite. It keeps you in check, it lets you know you can still feel, and it gives you the same feeling afterwards of having a good cry.

Your boyfriend cares about you; it's apparent since he doesn't want you to hurt. He probably knows you're not "hurting yourself", but he wonders what's hurting you inside that makes you want to cut. Have you tried talking to him about what hurts? You might find that just having someone you know, trust, and love to talk to is far more satisfying than cutting.

I am happy that you are trying to stop; it's a good decision, even if cutting is something you've used as a stress-reliever. There are other ways of dealing with stress. I found out that screaming into a pillow, crying really really hard (say, force yourself to cry until you're all tired and it feels stupid to keep crying), squeezing ice cubes, get a butterknife and run outside and hack at the dirt... Do something to get your frustration out, you HAVE to... Just try to find something that doesn't hurt you. Stress hurts you, and it's very important to find a way to deal with stress. I deal with it every day. I have problems with anger; sometimes, I just throw tantrums and scream and cry and kick and act like a two-year-old. It may look foolish, but hell, I'm not slicing myself up anymore. And I feel far more in-control if I'm not bleeding afterwards than if I was.

Good luck to you, sweetie.

i did this when i was 13 and 14, my bf at the time broke up with me for cutting myself, said it was too much for him to be worried about me. we have been married for 7 years, we have 3 girls and another on the way, he is a good guy, and when i lost him over that i just found other outlets, i have bipolar dissorder, and it is an explanation to why i used self destructive behavior as a way to deal with stress....substitution...find something else to help you deal with stress, it sounds like your bf would be willing to help you...ask him to help you..

your best bet is to stop, my hubby use to do it, but he stopped . but also like you he tried to hide it at times, but we're not that dumb to think you quit right away, it takes time and your b/f will need to understand that. hope things get better.
