All previous answers are wrong. Aristotle is credited with being the first scientist, because he used observation rather than unverifiable references. Mind you, the progress was halting. Even he still detected "anima" in frogs, as some sort of soul. The whole concept of purely using observation had not really sunk in. However, he is generally credited...

The word science comes from the Latin word, scientia, which means knowledge. Beginning in the "Middle ages" and until the "Age of Enlightenment," the word science (or its Latin cognate) meant any systematic or exact recorded knowledge. Science therefore had the same sort of very broad meaning that philosophy had at that time. It should be noted that in some languages (including French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian), the word corresponding to "science" still carries this meaning.
Centuries ago there was a distinction between "natural philosophy" (a term originally coined by Aristotle and put into use during the period from about 1600-1800 CE), and "moral philosophy" (at that time referring to the studies of human behavior and interaction). In the 1800's "natural philosophy" gradually gave way to the term "natural science." "Natural science" was gradually narrowed down to its current use, which typically includes physical sciences and biological sciences. The social sciences, originally "moral philosophy," are today typically included in under the auspices of science as well, to the extent that these disciplines also use empirical methods. "Moral philosophy" today refers specifically to the branch of philosophy called "ethics."

There is no answer to that. Nevertheless, placing a limit of the period and race, when we first became bipeds, then it was invented by a monkey-going-on-human biped, who became the first "scientist" to use the fundamental scientific principle of the fact that hitting a hard nut's shell with another hard object will cause the shell to break and hence allow the biped to consume the nut within.
