There is no real model yet for the origin of life. However a number of discoveries have been made concerning the origin of molecular and cellular components that are necessary for life on earth:
1. Conditions that existed 4.5x10^9 years ago result in the creation of certain basic small molecules of life, such as amino acids. This was demonstrated in the Urey-Miller experiment in the 50s.
2. Fat molecules can organise spontaneously into layers which form the basis of cell membranes.
3. Amino acids polymerize spontaneously into random RNA molecules.
4. The resulting molecule soup will compete for resources, by which I mean smaller molecules, to be able to grow further. Therefore there will be selection pressures for efficiency and diversity which will favour those macromolecules that can reproduces themselves or part of themselves most quickly and efficiently.
5. Thus evolution begins: once certain molecules are formed in the soup that can reproduce itself partly, they will soon dominate in the mix. In the next step the *better* ones among those will be selected and so on.
To summarize:
When: between 4.5 and 2.5 billion years ago
Where: in water ponds at the surface of the earth
Why: any mixture of organic molecules will change into a mix of more complex molecules by polymerization
How: Selective pressure will favour those molecules that react faster and more efficient.

The way you formed your question seems as if you do not "believe" in evolution. I suggest you read up on the topic from reliable sources as any anser you get here you can disregard as misinformed. Please, inform yourself. I am sure there are many science sites that can give you the latest theories on how life first started to reproduce. I can give you a quick rundown of your question though; a couple billion years ago, in the sea, there is no "why" and asking that question is going into religious grounds and should not be discussed in terms of science, DNA.

As this question has already been answered about as well as I could do by a couple of respondents I'm just going to ridicule the opposing creationist theory.Which appears to state that approximately 4500 years ago some omnipotent being decided for reasons unknown to create a universe in 7 days.He then created Man(Adam) and from one of Adams ribs he created Women(Eve) and he created a lovely garden for them to live in and all was good. Then one of them ate an apple offered to them by a talking snake incurring God's wrath because God liked apples and did n't want to share them,so he cruelly evicted both Adam and Eve from his lovely garden. Its a lovely fairy story but no more than that and anyone who thinks otherwise are themselves a good argument against evolution as their brains must have stopped evolving some time ago.Perhaps creationists are the missing link between man and ape, has anyone checked this? If anyone disagrees then why don't you come up with some concrete evidence for creationism.Personally I know why, because none exists.

I know what your getting at, and really I wouldn't call myself an evolutionist, but I can say it makes sense.
If the flu virus can change it's genetic makeup to survive I am sure any other organism can.
You will find that different people in hotter, more dry countries have a darker completion, and different hair when born, why is this?
They evolved over time to protect themselves.

when: A long time ago.
where: Probably in a dense soup of bio-molecules,
why: Assumption of purpose is a mistake
how: Checmical reactions and chance.
Btw, using the term "Evolutionists" would equally qualify everyone as being a Gravitationalist. But as graivty does not threaten your mythological beliefs, you have no need to infer that it is somehow a religion.

I realise that the answer to this question is still a mystery. I don't think anyone could answer this question that will satisfy everybody's philosophy....
