A bandmate of mine borrowed my keyboard without telling me. I told him that he could use to record his music, but only when I leave to go on vacation (that's what the original agreement was). He proceeded to take it earlier than expected (I'm not leaving for another 3 weeks), and he did not inform me of this. I'm afraid that he may be lying and that he might take it to a party to play. In addition, he does not know HOW to play it, so I'm afraid that someone else might at the party mess around with it. How should I go about confronting him and laying down the law that this is unacceptable - I paid for it, you don't know how to play it, and MOST IMPORTANTLY: it's mine!

The "it's mine" thing can be a bit much......even if your intention is to be pushy------but it won't give much reason to an on-again/ off-again idiot.Lay the guilt factor down......& make the person feel like a child."Did you not understand.....didn't you get it?" ; "You knew exactly what I asked you,it wasn't rocket-science,so.......WHY did you take it,KNOWING what I wanted.";
Comparative Value such as:
"If you told me (you can fill in the space),I wouldn't have done (x,y,& z)."; blah,blah....."Do you expect me to do that to you?Seems like you're begging me to.......".
*This usually gets them.......Good Luck!*

I wouldn't have any problem asking him about it- been there, same thing.
I loaned a guy friend of mine my alto sax to play around with, he couldnt play, just wanted to mess around with it, I was stupid enough to think that other people are as responsible as I am...well- i coudnt get back ahold of him for about 2 months-he wasnt home, wouldnt answer the phone- i saw him months later and told him I wanted my sax back...where the hell was it? he told me one of his friends broke into his apartment and stolen it. I was sick about it- had it ever since middle school. The moral of story: dont feel bad about laying down the law- it's yours, you paid for it. He may be a nice guy, but you don't know who might be hanging around with him, that might try to rip it off or trash it. Tell him he cant take it again without your knowledge, and if he ever does take it and something happens to it- he is reponsible! make him sign something...I know it's anal, but it will protect you from being hurt.

He took it without permission. Since there are circumstances you would loan it him thiough, the police would make a charge called breach of trust rather than theft. Usually that means they will go with you to his house and make him give it back, and the charges can be dropped.
