It's what the Jets fans do when the Jets draft a terrible player in the first round of the NFL draft. Imagine you had a huge rabid dog that's foaming at the mouth running towards you and you are alone, you would probably freak out.

Its original source came from the LSD days in the 60s, when if you had a bad trip, it was called "freaking out" (they could sometimes be pretty frightening).
It gradually changed into meaning an overreaction to a situation.
