I means to react too strongly too something. This is what many women do when they see a spider, snake or mouse. It's what the Jets fans do when the Jets draft a terrible player in the first round of the NFL draft. Imagine you had a huge rabid dog that's foaming at the mouth running towards you and you are alone, you would probably freak out.

Its original source came from the LSD days in the 60s, when if you had a bad trip, it was called "freaking out" (they could sometimes be pretty frightening).

It gradually changed into meaning an overreaction to a situation.

going from an emotionally stable state to one of complete emotional chaos perhaps through an altered state of mind due to drugs, dream terrors or unrational fearor fears surrounding a certain stimulus or stimuli in the surrounding environment. or simply by not paying attention to what you are doing and screwing it up...... Then comes the 'freak-out' where almost all of the body functions are accelerated for a brief period of time...
