Black widow spiders are found in many different habitats in North America. I couldn't be sure as to which habitat they thrive in the most but I wouldn't put it past them to also live in desert areas so long as there is a water source by way of their prey. I live in Texas where it gets very hot and dry during the summer and have observed the black widow even during the hottest summer. If you are in a desert area and want to observe the black widow I would suggest that you take a drive out onto the highway and look for bridge railings of the type that serve as a minor barrier right before you reach a bridge or culvert. Often on the back sides of these curved metal barriers you will find the black widow. Be careful not to disturb the nest as she carries a powerful neurotoxin which can in some cases be fatal to humans.

Black Widows are notoriously in the desert. We live in PHX and have killled more than a dozen widows. Got to the point where I caught some and kept them to teach children what they look like and how their webs look and how they hunt etc...
A buddy of mine told me he has seen BW in Los Angeles.

In the northeast they are attracted to wood. Theyre common world wide, and most are toxic enough to pose a serious threat to humans.
