The way you're saying it, racism. If you don't drive there simply because black people live there, yeah. That's racist.
If it's an area known to have a high crime rate and it also happens to be predominantly black, and you are avoiding that area because you can circumvent a crime area, then you are being cautious.
Be careful not to confuse race with criminality. There are certainly urban areas that have a large black populace, and due to a low tax base, poor education, and less opportunity, many of those areas are also high in crime. This is not because the residents are black. This is because the residents are desperate.
Saul Williams, the contemporary black poet/philosopher, has likened the situation to playing Monopoly... when the white people got a head start and bought up all the properties before the black people were allowed to start playing (post emancipation). Then the white people say, "Sure, play, it's a free country, we're all equal."... And it's really just not true, because there's no balance and no easy way to find balance. But it starts with recognizing the problem... that we need more and better education in urban areas, that we need more jobs and a more vibrant economy in lower class neighborhoods, that we need to offer options to young men in bad circumstances that make more sense and offer more potential than dealing drugs.
I'm starting to rant, so I'll stop. Apologies to Saul for poorly paraphrasing him. :)

i guess it would depend on the truth of your statement inside your question... the statement being that the predominantly black areas are unplesent. would you ask the question the same if the black areas were upscale homes with manicured lawns and picket fences where the lights are all out at nine and the kids were in bed at eight thirty? probably not. so your statement is saying that the black areas are a little dangerous, drug houses, prostitution, kids raceing around on broken bikes well after ten o' clock and the like. avoiding these areas does not make you racest at all, especially if you have a family in the car. tho most of these people are probably hard luck cases, plenty are willing to cut you for your $800 car.
what brings the possibility of racism is the 'predominantly black' description. there are a whole lot of white and hispanic people in these areas also.

Its definantly not racism. The streets that are high crime area in any city are always inhabited by minorities mainly blacks.the street everyone avoids here is 99%black .Prostitutes everywhere ,blacks selling crack etc.A white family was killed last month when using this street as a shortcut to get to a main street. They were struck by a cracked out black guy driving 80 miles an hour in the 20 mile hour zone. One of the white passengers was killed and the crackhead black guy was killed instantly.hope he rots in hell.Dont let these black sympathists blow smoke up your behind.

its fear....
not racism.. - racism means that you think your race is superior than another...
but it probably really doesnt have to do w/ black people... maybe the economic state of the city..
i bet you wouldnt mind driving through a rich black neigborhood... and you would feel werid driving through a white poverty level neiborhood

I think it's stereotyping to be honest. Not all black people are loud, scary, and violent. But some are....just like white people, and asian people, and arabic people...it depends on the person.

I guess you feel like you don't fit in and you wonder if someone is going to mess with you because you're not black. It's not because you want to be racist It's just because you think that black people will think you are.
