They have an oil gland that makes them taste nasty to birds and humans can smell it.

my 4 year old daughter tells me why cockroaches smell so bad is cause they forgot to wash between therir legs. LOL
But they stink like that to attact females and a defence against things that want to eat them

Yeah, when you smoosh one, they small like lemons or something, I don't remember but it's a defense mechinism to ward off other roaches.
