Man. He starts on all fours as he crawls; goes on two feet as an adult, & ends up walking with the aid of a cane.

Why, a person :-) S/he starts out crawling as a wee infant, then grows and learns to walk, throughout life, when later, old age brings infirmity and the need for the support of a third leg, hopefully a fashionable walkin' stick!

the reply Oedipus gave the sphinx replaced into "guy" because as a toddler they move slowly (4 legs) then advance up and walk (2 legs) and finally in previous age they use a cane or a team in presently (3 legs) besides the indisputable fact that the sphinx declared the reply incorrect. the reply replaced into "guy and lady".
