the original series is hands down the best for several reasons. the most important fact being that no sequel or follow up is ever as good as the first. not only were the story lines more consistently compelling and meaningful, but so were the actors and their delivery, even if a bit exaggerated at times like science fiction is supposed to be.
one can not forget the awesome music in those first episodes as well. sure the graphics in general and on the deck may not have been the best but lets not forget it was the late 60's and they were putting discs into disc drives before they existed. without trying to be critical of all that followed, i tried to watch all of the other series and always found them to rely too much on technology advances, new alien lifeforms and other themes that were too complicated for someone looking for good old fashion sci-fi entertainment. the original episodes, while they involved technology, aliens and time warps for example, the shows were more about the characters and their reactions to those things and the heroic nature in which they peformed their jobs in space - where NO MAN has gone before!

The correct dates are as follows:
Star Trek (1966-1969)
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1992-1999)
Star Trek: Voyager (1994-2001)
Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005)
My favorite is the original because it's just so classic and refreshing and a little cheesy. I think the Next Generation had the best stories though. Deep Space Nine had the coolest action sequences.

Voyager! I'm not sure why, but I just never got into the other series as much. Mainly I think I liked the Voyager characters, and not so much with the other series, but I think it was kind of because I already knew one set of characters pretty well, and watching a similar show with other characters just weird. Even though Voyager wasn't the first Star Trek series I saw, it was the first (and really only) one I watched a lot of, so yeah. I've actually spent probably more time than I should trying to figure out why I like that series more than the others, but I have yet to reach a coherent conclusion (as you can probably tell).

Star Trek TNG
I tried watching all the others. The older ones I have to giggle at all the camera tricks and plastics that the producers tried to use to get us to believe that it was futuristic. I just can't get into it.
Deep space nine wasn't interesting to me although I was in love with Dr. Bashir.
Voyager I couldn't get into probably because I was spoiled on TNG.
Enterprise is just insane. Scott Backula has no business even trying to be a Star Fleet Captain. He's always been A Quantum Leap'er to me.
I do own all but season 5 of TNG on DVD so I guess I'm really and addict now.

Deep Space 9 - I really loved the interaction of the characters, their depth and development over the years. Cool space battles, truly evil character (Dukat) and the mysteries of Odo.

I'm certainly a fan of the original series, but TNG was pretty good too.
