In what event?

On average the US is way better than any other country.. but there are fast swimmers everywhere

i would consider Michael Phelps to be the fastest swimmer in the world since he can win the most events, but if you are looking for pure speed the 50m record holder is Alexander Popov from Russia swimming it in 21.6 seconds

May 2003 Danyon Loader was inducted as the Swimmer Honouree into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Fort Lauderdale Florida, USA.

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Danyon Loader’s first-place finish in both the 400m and 200m freestyles distinguished him as his country’s first Olympic gold medallist in swimming since New Zealander Malcolm Champion swam on a combined Australasian Team in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. Loader was his country’s first swimmer to break world records (short course) in two different strokes, butterfly and freestyle. He won gold medals in Commonwealth Games and Pan-Pacific Championships and won silver and bronze medals at World Championships. Unwantingly, he became a New Zealand hero and his country’s most successful international swimmer ever

My guess is that the fastest swimmer would be the fastest in the 50 LCM freestyle...i use meters since we are talking the world and not the US. (LCM is long course meter, which is the designation for a 50 meter pool, this is what is used in the olympics, SCM is short course meter which is the designation for a 25 meter pool, which is more common.)

So the world record holder in the 50 LCM freestyle is
Alexander Popov of Russia. with a time of 21.64
this is 2.31 Meters per second.
