Today I was downtown with two clients, both severe Down's/MR, and some guy came up to me begging for money( beginning with a sob story about how Comp was screwing him over)- I politely told him that I was working...he got PO'd and told me that I wasn't compassionate and began to escalate- so I pointed out a cop car on the street and told him that he needed to get out of my face or I would go to the cop...he then wigged out and gave me the finger and left...what do you all think of this?

I should have mentioned that I was cornered inside of a building while we were waiting for the HandiBus- we couldn't really move away- it didn't make me look bad to my clients- they thought he was being a jerk, actually.

i onnce got hurt and i still did not demean myself by begging for people. workmans comp never helped me out until i said the hec with it and left the state. i finally got a settlement a year later. the point to all of this is if i needed money that bad i could have went and got welfare. if i truly wanted to but i had enough pride to not beg no one not even the government let alone strangers. you were absolutly correct in your decision. we are all responsible for ourselves. you work and you earn your money honestly why should you just give your money over to someone who did not have enough common sense to go to the government and ask them for a hand out. if they are not able to get money from the government the chances are they are not really hurt and the government feels they are able to work. if more people were like you this country would be a better place and would get the message across to bums that no one is going to keep supporting them. good job!

Well, I think pointing out the car only mad the situation worse, because it pissed him off and made you look bad in front of some clients. I think the best thing you could have done would have been to just politely say no and quickly move away. If he follows, then politely put him in his place. I think no matter what you did, this guy was going to wig out, so it's a lose-lose situation.

As long as you were polite you did the right thing. You were working and this guy was not respectful nor was he considerate. I am very careful when it comes to street beggars, often in towns, such as mine- there is a mission or shelter in the area- a lot of people don't go to the shelter because they do not want to submit to authority or follow the rules in order to receive help. Rather than give money to the panhandlers, I prefer to donate directly to the shelters. Homeless or hard times or not, there is never an excuse to be rude or pushy to get what you want.Don't feel guilty- you did the right thing.

What a jerk.
Great way to handle the situation!
You were upfront and assertive without causing your clients any undue distress.
Hope your clients weren't upset.

You didn't do a thing wrong. I rem. a panhandler asking me for spare change in -27 c day in January. So, feeling badly, I did and said "now don't spend this on drugs or booze, get a hot meal in your stomach." He takes my money, looks at me and says, "f*ck you, I'll do what I want with MY money."

I don't feel badly any longer about not giving out money to panhandlers or beggars any longer.

If I gave money to everyone who asked for it on the street, I'd be living on the street.

The problem nowadays is that you don't know who really needs money and who is just running a scam. You were totally within your right to deny that person. You shouldn't feel pressured into giving to the needy.

If anyone puts you in a position where you dont feel comfortable you have the right to ask them to leave, and you were obviously buzy. I wouldnt worry about it. You were polite at first, and if they persist even after that, then you have to get to the point. You didnt do anything wrong, dont worry about it.

Take care (^_^)

There are a lot of odd people in the world and you never know when one of them might be dangerous. You do what you have to protect yourself and those you're responsible for. What you did sounds perfectly in line with the situation to me.

I think you encountered one of the worlds many *******. You have to justify your compassion to no-one, especially to some jerk on the street. Ignore it and have a wonderful day.

personally i never give money to beggars, im not being selfish 'cos if your really want to help them donate your money to instituions that provides them long term help. the streets is not a safe place for anybody so, by giving them money your encouraging them to keep their current life style. the guys obviously used guilt to make you give in and that's not right afterall beggars cant be choosers.
