Sure its upsetting. But everyone has a choice to start making themselves look good.
I've never been to the US, but I've seen plenty of makeover shows to tell me that over there, they make make diamonds out of a piece of rock. The option is there.
The other option of changing peoples perception might take longer. If you cant beat 'em, join 'em.

Yea looks are vastly underrated, though people will deny it. I wouldn't say the percentage is that high, but more than people want to believe. Also, alot of success is based on not what you know, but who you know.
