I tried going to the beach when I was on my period. I did not use tampons at the time and really wanted to get into the water. It was extremely embaressing. My pad got too wet from absorbing the water and somehow floated right out of my swimsuit. It was just floating in the water for everyone to see. So my advice would be:

1. maybe try to find some kind of way to secure the pad so it can't float out and ware swim pants. they make swim pants for girls to put over their swim suits.

2. if it is a friendly outing try to bring a girl friend who won't mind staing out of the water with you and make the most of your time.

3. just stay home and find something better to do

4. try using a tampon - it really isn't that hard. it took me almost 8 hours the first time i tried and i was a virgin (very tiny) so it hurt a lot. it is kind of tricky to get it the first time but if you have had sex before it should be no problem.... if not, well it really isn't that difficult. I just was tired of not being to go anywhere and hated the feeling of having all that mess between my legs. tampons are much cleaner and it as if you aren't having a period at all (if you get rid of the cramps :p)

sorry if that was too much detail. hope i helped :D! good luck...

The problem is the time that you take the pad out of your bathing suit and getting into the water. The water will stop the flow of your period just like when you take a bath while having your period and a short time after getting out of the water your flow will start. So if you can wear a pad and discreetly take it out before entering the water and then make sure you put a new pad in after you get out then you should be okay.

If you get in the water with a pad on, it won't stick to your underwear, which definitely wouldn't be good. I was canoeing once and got thrown out of it...not a good situation. :)

You could try a progesterone only oral contraceptive pill, it might arrest the bleeding.
