Superman can hold his breath in space for 1 to 1.5 hrs. without an oxygen tank, so this would seem to imply he needs oxygen to survive, & could suffocate. However, Superman's internal organs share his invulnerability, so I think if he were underwater, he wouldn't suffer damaging effects from the water, but would suffer asphyxiation from the lack of air, so in essence, he'd still drown.

well, we can see sometimes it doesn't have any effects with him staying and hanging around outer space without an oxygen tank... hmm.. i'm wondering the same thing
