In terms of wrestling ability I'd say Kurt Angle, he's the most decorated star in and out of the ring.

When it comes to the most popular hands down it's The Rock, he can play the face or the heel to perfection and the crowd absolutely love him, I don't think you will ever see a bigger reaction from a crowd than The Rock gets, he is truly the Peoples Champ. (I'd also say Hulk Hogan but politics brings him down a notch, apparently Rocky is a real gentleman to the fans and to his peers)

But if you judge the greatest wrestler by these two factors put together, then the honours have to go The Nature Boy, Ric Flair. If you've watched Wrestlewar 89 against Steamboat, Clash Of The Champions against Sting, or even Taboo Tuesday against HHH you can see that this man has great in ring psychology (vs HHH) can wrestle a great mat game, and make his opponent look the best they can, if it wasn't for Flair, Sting and Steamboat wouldn't be as great as they were in my opinion.

Flair also cuts some of the greatest promos this sport has ever seen too many great ones to name, go look at the Monday Night Wars DVD and look at his promo on his return to Nitro in 98, that sent chills up my spine.

So to end it, Ric Flair is the greatest wrestler in the past 40 years.....WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Ric Flair, hands down. He gets a solid B+ for in ring ability, an A for being able to carry a match so both parties look good, an A++ for in ring psychology, and I can't even come up with a grade for his promos and general mic skills. A++++++++++++? He is the best ever in that department. The fact that the man is nearing 60 and is still someone who generates excitement every time he steps into the arena says it all. Long live the "Nature Boy"!

Over the last 40 years, Rick Flair. He has longevity, he's a great showman, and some skills. The crowd reacts well to him as a hero or a heel. With Stone Cold a close second.

For wrestling ability it is Kurt Angle. The man can carry a dummy to a great match.

In terms of crowd reaction/charisma it would be either Stone Cold Steve Austin or The Rock.

If you're talking in the sports-entertainment sense, it has to be Hulk Hogan. He is the Michael Jordan of wrestling. If you're talking in the "best grappler" sense, it has to be Lou Thesz. Legends like Lou Thesz and Ric Flair contributed so much as real 'wrestlers', and up to now, Thesz is widely recognized as the forefather of grapplers in professional wrestling. If there's anyone in WWE who he may pass his torch as best grappler ever, it would be the 'Extreme' Machine, Kurt Angle.
