It is pretty large, looks almost like a rose, it's white with the center petals tinged with red/pink at the edges. What is it???? I picked a couple out of a garden of an abandoned house in the northeast us. Here's a link to a pic I found of it online but I can't find the name of it.

it's a peony... the variety is probably "festiva maxima".

Definitely a peony. They are long-lived perennials, meaning that you don't usually ever have to divide them to keep them healthy. The prefer part to full sun, and once planted, don't like to be moved. The flower smell heavenly, but are a little heavy for the stems so they usually require staking. You can get peony rings at garden stores. These are a plastic ring divided by a grid on legs. You put it in the ground in the spring over where the peony is coming up and the plant grows up through the grid. Works better than single stakes on larger peonies with many stems.

What you picked is a peony. They are an old timey shrub type plant that are found in the Southeast as well. They come in many colors, and my mother has some her yard that were given to her. Hers are from 100 year old stock from a peony farm. The blooms are pink, and as big around as a teacup saucer. They are also very fragrant. To keep them full and with plenty of blooms, most folks mow them down in the fall. They come back up nice and bushy.

I have the same flowers in my yard. They are Peonies. They will keep coming up year after year. They smell great and are beautiful flowers. To keep them very healthy and coming back each year, cut them back to the ground when the leaves die down. You can't just plant the flower, you need to dig up the bulbs from somewhere and replant them. Or get some from a friend.

This is a peony. They are hard to grow, but once established they are beautuful! And they come in so many shapes and colors too.

This is a peoney. Before they open, the bloom is the size of a ping pong ball and they are covered in ants. They smell great!
