Anything not too powerful and easy to work on. I'd think about a classic British car. I wouldn't want anything with one heck of a lot of power for a sixteen-year-old, because (unless they're SCCA-trained) they probably don't have the experience to drive it safely and well.

Something like an MGA or B (chick magnets!) or an older RX-7 would be good (though the RX-7 is on the powerful side)--they will teach their owners how to drive real sports cars, so when they're ready to upgrade, something like a Bimmer ///M3 isn't a complete surprise.

Also, something classic or understated would be a lot easier to get affordable insurance for, since the person in question is both 1) sixteen and 2) male, the two criteria auto insurance companies like the least. Good luck in your search!

Late model or maybe even new Mazda Miata -- a real sports car that is also RELIABLE.

Consider the sportiest Honda Civic. Consider a Scion. Hyundai Tiburon?

Front-wheel drive cars are not sports cars people!!
A miata would be a nice choice. Don't get a high horsepower car before you learn the basics of driving.

A driver that young and inexperienced shouldn't have a sports car.....they have too much power and they are lethal!!!! That's why all these kids are getting killed these days because their parents get them a cool car to keep up with everyone else......hell we cant have our kid driving a old car ,,,lets get him a fast one so he gets killed before he graduates.............It is such a waste !!!!
There was a young man here in Georgia who was to graduate last week, spent all those years in school..........but he didn't get his diploma cuz he was killed in a car accident 1 week before he was to graduate. So please everyone use your head do NOT give your child a death trap let him get used to driving before you put him behind the wheel of such a powerful vehicle...You will keep them around longer

I'm not sure how much it costs, but the Solstice is a cool sporty car (kinda small though) that doesn't cost too much so far as sports cars go in my opinion.
