Its quite easy to teach yourself the guitar. I suggest learning the piano, then apply your knowledge to the guitar.

In my opinion, I think it is better to learn to play the piano first. The piano enables you to get the notes of a certain piece of a song. Advantage are: 1) in case there is no one to help you tune a guitar - as long as you have a piano (or even just a keyboard), you can do it easily. 2) notes can be easily translated to guitar chords.

Guitar:
- it's cheaper (a good classic guitar is cheaper than a good piano)
- it's mobile, can bring everywhere. It also means you can show off everywhere.
- it's easy to setup, just need the guitar, don't need to prepare lots of things
- it's nice (i'm not saying it's nicer than piano), the way you sit with the guitar, playing it, so romantic (and easy to attract girls)
- guitar can make many kind of voices by playing it differently.

While growing up, I was always told that once you learn to play an instrument like piano, every other instrument is much easier to learn.

It may not sound right or true, but I learned how to play the piano, & I found learning the guitar was much easier.

What it comes down to, is when you learn Music Theory, you can apply it to every musical instrument, that you want to learn.

Good Luck

Better for what?

They both have pros and cons. Easier to transport a guitar than a piano though.
