I studied psych at the undergrad level. Statistics was a mandatory course because when you study psych, you need to learn from studies... you need to gather and formulate information in order to arrive at a scientific conclusion.

Yes, it's necessary in my opinion.

Is it tough? It wasn't so bad... actually a nice contrast to all my other psych courses.

Yes. Whether it is tough or not really depends on whether or not you are good at math, but don't worry if you are not too good at math. Most statistics courses will teach you how to do it by hand, but then they have these awsome statistics programs like SPSS that will do the work for you. Stats is necessary, because you have to use these statistics to test these awsome theories on human behavior.

Yes, you will have a lot of statistics if you major in psychology. I had most of my courses during my junior and senior years. You will learn about correlational research, dependent vs. independent variables and what is "statistical significance" (p-value)..

It can seem intimidating but it really is not that hard to understand.

In my experience, both psychology and sociology majors at many universities are required to take at least one basic statistics course, whether acquiring a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree.

The statistics course I took was taught specifically for sociology and psychology majors who weren't math oriented. Though challenging, I found it less impossible and boring than some of my theory courses!!

Yes. We have to know what percentages of people are likely to get affected by certain mental disorders, etc, etc, etc. Statistics is not hard to learn, but hard to portray accurately. You can manipulate your data to make it tell you anything you want. Learning stats is easy. Learning PROPER stats is pretty fuzzy.
