Sparky Anderson

George Lee "Sparky" Anderson (born February 22, 1934 in Bridgewater, South Dakota) is ranked fourth all-time for career managerial wins in Major League Baseball (behind Connie Mack, John McGraw and Tony La Russa) and is the only manager in the history of Major League Baseball to win the World Series while leading clubs in both leagues. He piloted the National League's Cincinnati Reds to the 1975 and 1976 championships, then added a third title in 1984 with the Detroit Tigers of the American League.

He retired from managing after the 1995 season with a lifetime record of 2194-1834, for a .545 percentage. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 2000. He was also inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame the same year.

On May 28, 2005, during pre-game ceremonies in Cincinnati, Anderson's jersey number, 10, was retired by the Reds.

Well, it's a hard one to choose. People want to say Casey Stengel, but I think they didn't need a manager as loaded as the Yankees teams were back in the day. I want to say Tony LaRussa, but I wonder if I am prejudiced since I am a long time Cardinals fan. He is number 3 on the all time wins list. Maybe it's Bobby Cox since he has pulled a few seasons out that shouldn't have been so good, including his time in Toronto. But, he has only won one "World" Series, same for LaRussa for that matter. So, I think I will have to go with Earl Weaver for being such a wiley manager, having a high winning percentage (#9 all time at .583) and going to four "World" Series, though he only won one. Other notables are Joe Torre (loaded teams), John McGraw (loaded teams), Jim Leyland, Billy Martin and Whitey Herzog. Connie Mack lost more games than he won, but he did manage his team for 53 years and won 5 "World" Series.
