Ya that's true. Its more prevalent in villages. Its all because of dowry system. One local hospital even put a billboard 'Spend Rs 500 than a potential 50k'. Due to this the sex ratio has dropped drastically. 'By aborting the female foetus the marriage/reception etc costs would not 've to be beared & dowry could be received',such is the mindset of the villagers. The dowry system is also prevalent in cities to some extent. But women have spoken against this evil & brought the gilty to book. The aborted foetuses were found near nallahs/garbage bin. The wife is otherwise tortured for delivering a girl & is insulted for that. Hence many couples take sex determination test, abort the girl by bribing the doctors.

Not only did Indians do it; it was a well pracitced tradition hundreds of years ago. Not that common anymore but it does happens in many rural backwards communities.
It was cheaper to have a male child. Males were stronger and could work the fields easier; parents didn't have to worry about their shaming the family by getting pregnant or paying a lot of money for a wedding. They believed that males were just easier to deal with.

In order to put a curb on such action by law Govt of India has banned the revelation of the sex of the baby when any scan is done.
Also some of the state Govts have established CRADLE CENTRES where one can just leave the unwanted child and the Govt agency would take care of the child.

I believe that statement is true in the olden days..these days, a female child is as much desired as male child.
Back then and expecially in the villages, families in poverty have no choice but to abort/give away their female children because when the girls grow up and are of marriageable age, they need to give dowry to the prospective husband, which the poor families can't afford.

Absolutely not. The standard has changed reently. It was true, like in many other third-world countires, that women were inferior.
Now female children are what are wanted. Islamically, Men have to give money to their brides before a marriage can take place.

Don't know about India but in China the government only allows you to have two children, unless they are girls then you got another try for a boy.
I think.
But in the rural areas they dont practice it as much as in the big cities.

Yes, if you have a female, you have to pay a dowry which costs the family of the daughter a ton of money. A son would receive the benefits of that dowry making the family wealthy.

Yes. It is called "sex selection"
"A 1985 survey in Bombay, for example, revealed that 90 per cent of amniocentesis centres were involved in sex determination, with nearly 96 per cent of female foetuses aborted."
