I have friends who live in a flood zone that are not allowed to maintain their properties. The government wants to buy buildings only and not pay the value of the land itself. That means that they wouldn't get very much for their property. The government allows other people to rebuild and repair their homes and gives them the money to do this with when they live in flood zones. This flood zone is in a Civil War battlefield and the government wants to build a national military park here. This is not fair to people who have lived and worked hard all their lives.

When it comes to property, it should be handled by the local or state government, not the federal. The only time federal would be involved is in the issue regarding a national monument or park. I'm not sure how that process works, but I would imagine most of the blame should be pointed at the local level.

When people build in flood zones, they assume and accept certain risks. I certainly don't want my tax dollars given to people who knew that the area they chose to make their home might flood out.

Maybe someone should invent something that a homeowner in a flood zone can make monthly payments to so that if their home is destroyed, they can be reimbursed for their loss. They could call it FLOOD INSURANCE.

Oh wait ... my bad. It already exists - but some choose not to buy it. THAT is their bad.

What kind of an idiot builds on a flood plain on a flood zone? What bigger kind of idiot covers their losses after they do build on a flood plain?
