Probably a shortened form of Mexican Sp. potiguaya "marijuana leaves."

Because over the years many drug dealers have been caught by using the term (marijuana) so to avoid being caught many nicknames have been created. Pot, 420, grass, weed, mary jane.etc...... Are all nicknames that people have used.

According to both Merriam-Webster and the Oxford University Press dictionaries, "pot" could be derived from Mexican Spanish "potiguaya", which means "hemp leaves".
