what does gloves have to do with it

I call mine the Jockey Box. Not sure why tho. LOL

The glove compartment probably comes from a very long time ago. Everyone used to wear gloves for driving. Maybe that is where they kept the gloves, in that compartment.

In the old days, the drivers wore gloves. The compartment was really, only, intended for/large enough to fit a pair of gloves

Because back in the day when cars were somewhat a new thing, drivers always wore gloves while driving and they kept their driving gloves in the "glove compartment" or "glove box" along with goggles if the driver so desired to wear them. .

I can't say for certain but it may be due to a fact, that I can't confirm, that there may have been a point in the history of cars, that the compartment was used to store the driver's gloves when they weren't driving.

It was probably intended to keep driving gloves in and then people decided it could be put to other uses.
