The governments with the money - US, Great Britain, and China - seem not to care that much. The US has been taken over by multinationals whose bottom line is money. Protecting the environment seems not to be profitable. The mulitnationals have bought the government and thus have gutted all the protection earlier governments have put in place. Yes, the planet has significant problems.
Global warming is real. Read Kim Stanley Robinson's books _40 Signs of Rain_ and _50 Degrees Below_ (another one should be out to finish the trilogy soon). We have to understand that we must work as a global people.
I hope that we can do that soon.

Money makes the world go round.
The oil and coal industry (powered by automobiles that use gas, used for energy at factories and plants, heat and energy for commercial use) is worth billions.
Aerosol sprays (hairspray, air freshener, anything that comes in a can under pressure pretty much) But ya, it's burning the ozone which blocks most harmful rays from the sun adding extra heat to the atmosphere. It's kind causing a green house effect on the Earth but, like I said, money makes the world go round. Governments would first have to think of alternatives for the people to go for and then challenging these billion dollar industries wouldn't be profitable for the economy.

Because the governments of the world are composed of individual humans that have the ability to rationalize their actions and are primarily concerned with advancement of themselves as individuals.
