it doesn't harm them does it...sometimes it's needed to calm an animal down so it doesn't attack people...I don't know...maybe I'm wrong...haha!

Do you consider it cruel when they put a person temporarily to sleep while they are doing surgery on them? The tranquilizer doesn't hurt the animal any more than an injection. And yes it is necessary. When certain animals escape they could kill or severely injure people. And the choice is left to either tranquilize the animal or kill it. Would you think it less cruel for them to kill it? They also use tranquilizer when they need to do surgery on it to save its life sometimes or to get data on how the animal is doing so they can help prevent the species from going extinct. Would it be more cruel to give it a tranquilizer or to just let the species go extinct altogether? Sometimes they tranquilize them so they can move them without the animal injuring itself from trying to escape. Sometimes the animals are moved to keep them from getting shot by poachers. Which is more cruel, letting a poacher shoot it or tranquilizing it so you can move it safely? It does not stress an animal out. What stresses the animal out is trying to contain or control it. A tranquilizer only kills if the person who gives it to the animal isn't smart and gives the animal too much. Don't give it enough and it could wake up and kill you while you're doing what you need to do. That's why anesthesiologists are paid so much, they could kill you during surgery by giving you too much anesthesia or you could wake up in the middle of a critical surgery if he gives you too little.

I've worked around animals all my life. You have to understand why people do what the do when they take care of animals. There's a reason why most of it is done. So many people grow up in the city away from raising animals then they throw their uneducated moral beliefs on people like farmers and zoo caretakers who are doing their best to take care of the animals and give them the best care they can. They don't like to be cruel to the animals, but some things have to be done.

Tranquilizing is similar to anesthetic for people. It can be stressful for the animal. The famous "crocodile hunter", Steve Irwin, actually jumps in with the crocodiles for a reason. The tranquilizing has proven to actually be more stressful than his methods. Also, it can kill crocodiles. I don't think a single one has come out to be honest.
However, in some cases it is better than the alternative. For example, bear relocation. They are tranquilized, but that's only because the alternative is being shot. I'd rather be tranquilized than shot any day!

It is a good idea if you are going to be causing the animals stress. Some animals can't handle travel or vet visits no matter how well trained. It's a phobia like people get.
And of course you need to tranqualize any animal that will potentially hurt the people trying to help them.

It's more cruel to not tranq them and have them injure themselves while a vet tries to help them. You can't tell the animal "please be still, this is for your own good"
