download a freeware program called verbot 4 by conversive at http://www.verbots.com. It uses MS agents but if you want your computer to speak the text in your PC, download TextAloud MP3 from http://www.nextup.com.

You should try e-Speaking Voice and Speech Recognition software. Videos of the software are at the links below.

These conversations are "scripted" (i.e., they follow a certain structure and syntax). As long as you speak the language of the computer, it will respond to you accordingly. The language of the computer is somewhat limited to its domain. The computer understands about files, folders, applications, programs, forms, websites, connections, e-Mail, text, images, etc. etc.

The computer does not understand about professional hockey teams, or skiing at Tahoe. So, if you stick to the contexts in which the computer understands, you can have a conversation with it.

If you go outside the context of the computer's domain, it will have trouble conversing with you.

As far as I know, no genuine program exists. Most of the programs are tricks in the sense that they paraphrase what you typed and ask a seemingly intelligent but canned question.

The first program wa "ELIZA" writtern in early 1960s. A web-based version is available at http://www-ai.ijs.si/eliza/eliza.html or http://www.manifestation.com/neurotoys/eliza.php3 (and at several other places).

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA for more details.
